Journey to the self

VAI YOGA

VAI YOGA was established in Fiji. VAI comes from a Fijian word meaning manta rays. It is used to represent the beautiful ocean in a tropical country. The nature of ocean involves many forms, which can be powerful, stillness and union. This is what yoga brings to people as well, strength, calmness and oneness.

Our philosophy

Everything starts within you. Through mindful movement, we  notice our body sensations, thoughts and feelings. This mental process enhancing our capacity of giving connection with self.

Relaxation techniques are integral components of yoga practice.  This physiological process reduces heart rate and respiratory rate. Through regular breath work, we gain control over negative emotions and reduce the level of anxiety.

Our classes focus on building physical strength and inner strength to face practical aspects of life.

Rachel began her yoga journey when she suffered from chronic pain and stiffness after too much sitting at her office desk. She discovered regular mindful movement helped her reduce muscle pain enormously. She also realized climbing up the corporate ladder carried a high cost of her physical and mental wellbeing.

Her passion for yoga gave her courage to leave her banking career in Hong Kong. In 2014, she did a certificate IV in yoga teacher training in Byron Yoga Centre. In 2015, she started up VAI YOGA in Fiji, offering corporate yoga program at Embassy of the United States of America, United Nations Population Fund and Paradise Beverages (owned by The Coca-Cola Company).

After moving to Perth, she continues to spread yoga to the community and discovers yoga program for seniors is much needed. A specific yoga program for seniors is developed, helping seniors build strength, improve mobility and reduce pain in community setting and aged care facility.

Aiming to advancing her yoga teaching, Rachel completed Master of Occupational Therapy at Curtin University in 2021. Her yoga class focuses on anatomy and alignment, mindful movement and breathing, using an evidence-based occupational therapy approach. She is interested in skill-based therapy, using yoga, body-mind connection to help people living with mental health concerns.
